Description:Eye-tracking studies show internet readers pay close attention to information-carrying images. In fact, when the images are relevant, readers spend more time looking at the images than they do reading text on the page.” (source). In 2018, Infographics will continue to be a popular tool for digital professionals to present information or market products.

The goal of any infographic is to present information in a clear and easy-to-digest manor for your audience. In reality, it can be challenging to include the required information without overwhelming the viewer with a complicated user-experience. Infrographics can quickly become crowded, and cluttered with text. Adding interactive hotspots on top of infographics allows digital storytellers to include necessary information, while simultaneously keeping the infographic’s visual integrity intact. Walmart achieves this with an interactive infographic that details how they’re implementing technology to improve the customer and associate experience.  Each hotspot reveals a video clip that provides context to their various initiatives.

ThingLink Tip: Use custom icons to give your audience a visual cue or label as to what is underneath the hotspot. Notice how Walmart includes a clock icon for their “saving time” initiative, and a handshake for “trust”?  In addition to using specific graphics, Walmart uses eye catching yellow icons that are ideal for capturing the attention of viewers.
